The Road w/ Anna Part 7

For the next couple of weeks Ana and Trent would meet up at the same spot doing different songs out of either one of their notebooks. Afterwards they would have a cup of coffee and talk about themselves. Trent would ask her about her mother while Ana would ask about his father and then they would find a way of asking other odd questions through fits of laughter after they discussed their most embarrassing moments on stage or on the soccer field.

Ana never thought that she would grow to like someone as much as she did Dmitri and that gave her a feeling of accomplishment yet at the same time sadness. Trent had awoken the side of her that hadn’t been alive in her since she had first met Dmitri all those years ago. She didn’t know whether to feel content about that or to stop while she was still a head just to avoid any disappointment if anything happened but she knew that she couldn’t let this opportunity of blissfulness fade away.

Some nights they would skip their practice and just walk along the shoreline simply just to talk. Ana would think later on that simply talking was what brought them together not just music. Her brother would watch them sometimes from their hotel balcony and smile down at them. A part of him hoped those times like that would never end while the other had his doubts as it usually did. That was the curse of being a Carter there was always something that would make a content moment into the worst kind imaginable.

One night after class Trent come up to Ana with a smile on his handsome face that made his eyes sparkle, “Ana?” He asked as she turned from one of the students she had been speaking to for a moment, “I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind going out on a date with me tonight.”

She smiled her brightest smile, “I would be honored to, Trent. What time do you want to meet up?”

He looked down nervously, “I was kind of hoping we’d do it before the sun set all the way.”

She shook her head in confusion, “But that’s twenty minuets from now. Clearly not enough time to get ready so why would you want to do that?”

He took a step towards her as he took her hands in his, “The best part about Greece is watching the sunset during a full moon. It’s perfect when you want to make a memorable night with someone you really care about.”

Ana cocked her head as she looked up at him, “Then I’ll go get dressed right now and meet you at the beach.” She then made her way towards her hotel room.

Just as she was putting on make up her phone started to ring loud enough to cause her to jump. She quickly answered it as her jaw dropped as she heard Dmitri’s husky voice from the other end.

He stood outside her window looking up at her balcony as he said, “Hey, Annie. Guess where I’m at right at this very moment.”

She sat down at the edge of her bed as she said with a sigh, “Where, Dmitri? I don’t have time to play any of your guessing games right now so you might as well just spit it out before I decide to hang up.”

He smiled into the phone as he said, “You never surprise me, Annie. Well in any case I’m looking up at a window terrace where the most beautiful woman I know is probably wondering why I’m standing underneath her balcony talking to her on the phone when I should be up there with her.”

She made her way towards the window and looked down at him, “Why aren’t you in Moscow with your dad and his wife?”

He looked up at her as he said towards the window, “I couldn’t stay away from the one who tried to push me away. I made a mistake by leaving you behind, Anastasia Rose Carter. Can I come up so that we can talk in private? It’s starting to get a bit chilly out here.”

She took a step back as she contemplated this even though she knew Trent would be disappointed if she weren’t at the beach waiting for him. Yet she knew that she still loved Dmitri enough to have the need to speak to him. She took in a deep breath as she pressed the buzzer to let him through the gates.

He came up to the room and hugged her tightly against him as he whispered, “I’ve missed you so much that Moscow was so unbearable without you.”

Ana shook her head with confusion as she took a step away from him, “Why are you here, Dmitri? What made you change your mind to come find me after three months of not bothering to even talk to me until now? I thought you never wanted to speak to me again last time I was a your house.”

He placed a hand to her cheek, “You know I would never do that to you. I couldn’t stay away so I took the earliest flight just to tell you how much I need you in my life. You were always there for me and I just never bothered to look where I should have all along.”

They sat down on the bed as he told her all that he had been going though in Moscow and Ana sat there as she nodded once in a while as she listened. They talked for hours until both of them fell asleep in each other’s arms. Ana had gotten her wish to have him but she couldn’t stop thinking about Trent. Love wasn’t supposed to be that way when you were with someone you felt so much for yet there she doubted how she felt for Dmitri even as he lay curled up next to her.

The next day as she was in her music class she didn’t see Trent even as she went to the next class that they had together. Every time that Dmitri was around between her breaks she kept her eye out for him and still found no sign anywhere. This lasted for several days that Dmitri was in town. Finally after close to a week of not seeing Trent she asked her brother to take Dmitri to one of the other islands for a day trip. She sat with the guitar and her notebook lightly strumming. Trent came around the corner hesitantly as he looked down at her.

“Where’s your boyfriend, Anastasia?” Trent said curtly.

She looked down as she said with a swallow, “It’s not like that, Trent.”

“Let’s see you ditched me the night we were to have our date for the one person who hurt you in the first place. Then you’re holding his hand around the island like you’re an item. Now tell me how that’s not in anyway giving off that type of impression to anyone else who knows what they see?” He said with clenched fists, “I thought you were different, Ana. I thought you were better than that to go back to guys like Dmitri Marc ova. Did you really even like me or were you just waiting for him to make up his mind?”

Ana looked up at him with a shake of her head, “You think I didn’t want to just run out the door on my best friend for you? He was my first love and not to mention the most loyal friend I’ve ever had. I loved him but I feel more for you that I thought I ever could. You have no idea what it’s like to finally have what you thought you wanted and realize that it really isn’t what you should have been looking for. I can’t hurt him or you because of this. I thought that the reason I ran away was to be rid of anything that would cause something like this to happen. I don’t know who I am anymore and it scares the hell out of me. Dmitri told me about your girlfriend back in Daytona. Now this news never once came up before so this makes me wonder why I’ve been worried about hurting you when you’re just as bad as the rest of them. Now you tell me where’s the justice in that?” She then was about to walk past him when he caught her by the elbow.

He looked down before looking at her, “She dumped me before I left for Greece. She said that we needed out space until she could figure out what she really wanted out of our relationship. I almost proposed to her before graduation so instead we both decided that we needed a break right now. I didn’t say anything about her because I needed a fresh start without her. I didn’t plan on doing anything other than to get through this summer. I didn’t expect to fall for someone who’s the smartest person I’ve slowly come to know. It’s the choices that we have to deal with when all we want is more from the people we care about. I have a track record of girls I’ve fallen for that never ended up going as far as just having them stand beside me. I like you a lot, Ana and seeing you with Dmitri Marc ova just burns me up inside. He doesn’t deserve to even touch you much less be close to you.”

Ana closed her eyes as she said softly, “I know but I care enough for him to forgive him. The only reason I even came here tonight was to tell you that I couldn’t see you anymore, Trent. It just hurts too much anymore to act like nothing happened between us when it could very well be the one thing that tears me a part.” She then walked out of the building back towards her hotel room. Trent stood there as tears sprang to his eyes and set his notebook down to write out new lyrics.
